Author Topic: What's wrong with the pathfinding? I'm getting announcements every second!  (Read 607 times)

I'm getting fed up right now, because my anouncement log is basically all red.

First of all, I got a child with the error:
Cancels store owned item: Item inaccessible.

He's just standing at my meeting hall doing diddly squat. I have no idea what he wants to get or go to, so this message is just spamming me CONTINUOUSLY every single second I am breathing! at the very least, I want to know what the hell he wants, because I'm getting extremely annoyed at him and I'm probably going to kill him if it doesn't stop.

Secondly, I'm trying to build a stone bridge and I've got the error:
Cancels construct building: Could not find path

What?? The bridge is RIGHT AT THE ENTRANCE! I've seen my stoneworker walk up right in front of it before, why the hell is it not working now? Thinking that maybe my dwarves need to go to the other side, I make a little hole on the side of my fortress. Nothing, I'm just watching my little stoneworker idly standing at the meeting hall. I've tried to build it with several other dwarves, and I have built it in the past at the exact same spot. Why won't these dwarves move?? Why am I seeing red?

Worst of all, I get 2 goblin ambushes coming in through that tiny hole in the wall which I can't wall off until all of them are dead. That's half my military full of untrained wrestlers gone.

I am very annoyed, and I will flood my fortress in anger if those messages don't stop popping up.

Have you told your dwarves not to go outside?  That would slow down their attempts to get things from outside...

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.

It's not the goblin ambush that I have a problem with. I want to eradicate the source of these error messages that are clogging up my announcement! The bottom of the screen is always red simply form those two errors. Should I upload my save file so that it's easier to see what the problem is? I'm a total noob at this game, but I don't think I'm missing anything obvious here.

Usually there are 3 possible problems in this regard:

1. As mentioned, you may have turned the "Dwaves stay indoors" on, at the options.
2. The item in question (e.g. bridge) may be forbidden, thus you need to "un-forbid" it.
3. The path is blocked.

Judging from your description, I concur with the previous post.

1. The dwarves can go outdoors.
2. The bridge is still in the middle of construction. The construction keeps on becoming suspended and I need to reactivate it (to no avail).
3. The bridge is not blocked as far as I can tell. I'm seeing my stonecrafter walking up to it and partially construct it. Then I get that error and I don't know why.

As for the child, I don't know what he wants, how am I supposed to make the object he wants accessible?

I see, for clarification then we think he can't find the building material for the bridge? It's possible the material for the building has been melted/flooded/whatever and he's freaking out about not being able to complete the bridge with the specific stone he had already picked out. Have you tried starting the construction again from scratch? Sounds quicker.

re the bridge -

Kin has it zactly.

If only one of the several stones dedicated to building it got moved, it has no idea where that stone went, and you need to re-start.  This can happen fairly easily, especially if there's a lot of other building/mining going on, or you are a "hands on" type of player (like me), constantly forbidding and claiming and dumping, etc.  One stone gets channeled down a level or shifted 1 tile to allow for another building, and the entire project grinds to a halt.

Meanwhile - channeling? 2nd wall? traps??? dunno...

re the kid -
Hrmmmm.... <...thoughts of magma...>

Check his inventory - is he holding anything that might need storing? Could you not have a stockpile for what he's holding?

There are only a few tasks that children do - according to the wiki, they are...
    # harvesting crops, if the 'All dwarves harvest' order is on;
    # removing constructions (such as walls, floors, ramps);
    # pulling levers;
    # filling designated ponds;
    # hauling items to the trade depot

And a couple others that don't involve items.  Any of those ring a bell, about something that might have changed, some path that might have gotten blocked or item/stockpile/area that might have been removed?  A new building that is blocking a door?

As an extreme solution, some of the 3rd party utilities can assign jobs to kids.  If you download and use one of those (like Dwarf Manager, iirc?), you can <A>ctivate the kid as military, and then deactivate, and (hopefully) break him out of his trance.  (Those utilities have other uses, too - see wiki)

Do also note that if you make a raising bridge, the dwarf needs to be able to path to the side of the bridge that it raises on. If he can't do that, then the bridge can't be built.
