But... if you like a game AND that game isnt full of restrictive copy protection/spy/malware/annoying bullcrap, then, by all means PAY. Even buy 2 copies if you have to, to show your appreciation.

Money is the only democracy that is left. Vote.

This. I tend to like finding out what I'm buying before encouraging the development of similar games with my money. If I enjoy a game, or even like the concept behind it, I'll go buy it. If it's something that really isn't very good, I won't bother.

I've found that going out and getting an actual job has drastically increased the threshold for "good", though, probably since I have so much less time to play games.

I buy games I want to play online. That's about it. So I say, the greatest way to have copy protection against me is to make a game:
1. something I really like.
2. something that needs to be played online to be fun.

Either that or:
1. something I really like.
2. There's no way to pirate.

Second option is pretty rare but it happens from time to time.

Also, agreed completely about the DRM thing, the only people copy protection is going to annoy are the customers. The piracy groups see it as a challenge, they compete with each other in who can crack games faster, so better copy protection only means more street cred to whoever cracks it means more effort on part of the crackers. Totally counterproductive. And the p2p sod will just use that crack and never deal with the protection at all either. As a matter of fact I routinely crack my legit games because I refuse to juggle CDs on demand. I could understand it back in the day when harddisks were small...

This, basically.  I've been sold utterly broken software (Mercenaries 2) or programs that included draconian DRM mentioned nowhere on the package or in the documentation (Half-Life 2) enough times that I'm basically done with mainstream gaming.  If some gaming company spends enough advertising dollars on hype that it actually interests me in their product, I may pirate it to give it a "test drive".  When I find a product that actually lives up to the hype, then I buy a physical copy from a store to support the company that made it.

Doesn't it clearly say that it requires Steam and you should visit the Steam website before buying? Says that on the Orange box. Says that on L4D. Hell it's even in contrasting font so you can't miss it! It's not exactly in tiny font either. Not their fault you don't read the back of the box. Hell it even says do not open the box and return the game to the store according to the store's return policy if you do not want to use Steam.

The Orange box came with a localized cover translation, but I special ordered L4D and got a copy without a localized cover. Which means it's in English.

I quote the exact words that it says it the box:

Product offered subject to your acceptance of the Steam Subscriber Agreement ("SSA"). You must activate this product via the Internet by registering for a Steam account and accepting the SSA. Please see www.steampowred.com/agreement to view the SSA prior to purchase. If you do not agree with the provisions of the SSA, you should return this game unopened to your retailer in accordance with their return policy.

The box is green and black. The font is red. It's IMPOSSIBLE to miss.

Irrelevant stuff about Steam

You tell me all about how the Orange Box and L4D have Steam on them, but I didn't mention either of those games.  Maybe Valve has gotten better, I don't know and don't care, they lost my business forever the way they handled the HL2 launch.

Yes, I'm sure there's all kinds of warnings about Steam nowadays.  I'm not talking about now, I'm talking about when I bought Half-Life 2, the day it came out.  The day Half-Life 2 came out, there was no mention of Steam on the box AT ALL.  No website you could go to to read the SSA, no warning that you'd have to download 90 megabytes of files (over a 56k connection, in my case) to play a singleplayer game with no multiplayer component whatsoever, and no warning about how Steam would integrate itself into my other Valve games without asking me.

Rather than further derail this topic, I'll link back to the (locked) topic where I went into detail about my unpleasant Steam experiences:

I said based on those two I had to assume it was mentioned on the box. A dick move by Valve.

2. There's no way to pirate.

Almost impossible unless the game was so underhyped the devs didn't even tell their friends they released a game.

Almost impossible means it's still possible.

You can't pirate Odyssey games can you?

I can't pirate Guitar Hero World Tour Wii downloadable content for some reason.

Or some other extremely obscure games.
