Longer aqueducts
« on: October 15, 2006, 05:44:00 am »

Please!

With aqueducts bugged as they are, it is currently impossible to build one successfully across the river at any point other than a very very specific bits on the straight parts. Until the bug is fixed, would it be possible to give us a workaround by allowing us to build longer aqueducts so that the ends are way away from the river?

there's already a workaround for getting lava across the river... which is the only reason you'd need an aquaduct.

Simply build a bridge instead of an aquaduct, and flood the lava with a floodgate.  The flooded lava will travel over the bridge.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing, but it would be far nicer to have a usable aqueduct...

Gau, you should put your little design picture on the wiki. Would save everyone the trouble.

I just want to make sure I've got this right:

  • Put a floodgate next to the magma river.
  • Hook it up to a lever.
  • Build bridges over the chasm and the cave river.
  • Put another floodgate wherever you want the exit.
  • Hook it up to a lever.
  • Dig a channel connecting the magma river floodgate to the chasm bridge.
  • Dig a channel connecting the chasm bridge to the cave river bridge.
  • Dig a channel connecting the cave river bridge to the exit floodgate.
  • Pull the lever on the magma river floodgate.
  • Hope that no dwarves decide to take a dip in the magma channel.
  • Wait for kobolds.
  • Pull the lever on the exit floodgate.

Am I missing something, or do I have something wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Bear in mind you have to flood the lava across the bridge: that means if you're using channels for the main bits then you'll need another floodgate before the bridge. Of course, you can flood your main lava channels as well, so long as there's no chance of it escaping. Saves on channel construction.

By the way, since the chasm is narrower than the cave river, and not filled with liquid, you can actually build a working aqueduct across it. I suggest having a branch off so you can kill off all those nasty chasm-dwellers with some lava :P

OK.  Sooooooo... please bear with me for being so explicit, but I really want to make sure I get this straight before flooding my whole map with water and/or lava.

Let's say I want to use channels as much as possible, to minimize the chance of accidental uncontrolled floods.  I'm OK with the amount of time that it takes to construct channels and so forth.

And I want to get lava positioned such that I pull a lever, and it floods into a channel that's already filled with water (hooked up to the outside river).

So, is the following plan correct?

  • magma river -> floodgate (transforms "river lava" to "channel lava")
  • floodgate -> channel (gets filled with "channel lava")
  • channel -> aqueduct over chasm (gets filled with "channel lava")
  • aqueduct -> channel (gets filled with "channel lava")
  • channel -> floodgate (transforms "channel lava" to "flood lava")
  • floodgate-> bridge over cave river (gets filled with "flood lava")
  • bridge -> channel (converts "flood lava" to "channel lava")
  • channel -> closed floodgate (stops channel lava, until opened)
  • closed floodgate -> water channel (gets flooded with lava when the closed floodgate is opened)

Thanks.

Wait a minute... if I'm understanding the wiki correctly, then all I need to successfully place a three-high aqueduct east-west across the river without it picking up the river water is:

  • The three easternmost squares must be on land.
  • The three westernmost squares must be on land.
  • The middle square of the next-to-easternmost column must be on land.
  • The middle square of the next-to-westernmost column must be on land.
  • Any other square may be on river.

Is that correct?

That doesn't sound like it would be that tough to find a spot in the river that can support that configuration.  Am I missing something?

Thanks again.

That's it, yes. If you're that worried about it, backup your save.

Here's an example of aqueducts at work.

Huh. That didn't seem to work for me. Perhaps you just need a straight bit of river.
