[40d] Dwarfs ignore 'chop down trees' designations
« on: April 27, 2009, 02:04:10 pm »

This just started happening for no apparent reason.

Last action I took before this started happening was deleting a few regions I wasn't using anymore.

After that, they started ignoring it. It didn't matter which mix of skills they had (even sole woodcutters) the designations were ignored.

Instead they lazed about the wagon with the 'No Job' status.

I'm thinking of just reinstalling the game to try to fix this. But it's worth looking into.

Possible stupid question: you do have axes, right?

Do you have anyone still wielding it?

Is it forbidden?

Yeah, find the axe and make sure it's equipped.  Also, having the woodcutting SKILL isn't enough -- they have to have the labor enabled too.

The fact that you say they're lolling around the wagon makes this unlikely, but the dwarves are also allowed to go outside, right?

Making your woodcutter also a miner is also a bad idea.

I think this case is actually handled now -- turning on woodcutting disables mining and vice versa.

Makes me wonder if it handles having both at embark, but too lazy to check, and doesn't sound to be his problem.

I'd always wondered if having them hold two weapons would solve that.

Related problem, but only applies to my mayor. He refuses to cut wood AND mine. Checked it personally: Tool in hand and not forbidden, job designation activated. Other dwarves mine and cut wood just fine.

Unless mayors are forbidden to hard labor when it reaches a certain city value?

WHICH tool is in his hand?  Which labor (mining or woodcutting) is turned on?  What are his military weapon options?  If he's holding an axe, is it a standard battle axe or a two-handed axe?

Standard. Checked on both accounts, either when wielding a pick or when wielding an axe. Just ends up loitering with "no job". Other dwarves did not have this issue. Just the mayor. Mining was legendary, woodcutting was not, in case you're wondering.

For the Mayor case, it occurs to me that the legendary-weapon code might interfere, but that's just a guess.

I don't recall having any problems with mayors mining, myself (and, for some reason my legendary miners often get elected, until a few immigrant waves in when it goes to a useless, unused skill guy because they have the time to yammer)
