Do marksdwarfs shoot more accuratly while crawling?
« on: December 04, 2009, 05:22:26 pm »

Sometimes my markdwarfs will pass each other while shooting, and will begin to crawl. This makes their shots slower for sure, but does it affect how well they shoot?

I don't think anyone has done any tests of this. Feel free to experiment, but it's gonna be tricky because as you test, the dwarves' skill will increase, which certainly improves their accuracy...

This sounds like something that should be tested in Adventure Mode. Way too hard to manage in Dwarf Mode.

The way to test this in dwarf mode is to embark with a Proficient marksdwarf, as many bolts as you can afford, and something to make a target out of. Save, then set him to archery and see how many hits he gets. Then quit without saving, remove the legs from the dwarf body definition, and try again.

Or you could simply drop his lower half in magma...

Even if they do, they move MUCH slower so they will shoot much less often (probably half or less).

So it's not really worth it, imo. All it takes is 1 lucky bolt to pierce someone's eyes, stomach, throat, heart, and lower left leg so you really want to throw as many in the air at once as possible.

Literally. You're better off just throwing the bolt.

Muskets vs. Rifles debate, you could say.  Well actually Rifles could fire more often and more accurately...

But anyway.  Crawling for more accuracy at the cost of rate of fire would definently be worth it if the accuracy went up enough, and that would be less bolts to clean up or forge later.  I'd be willing to gamble with a high chance of a brainshot as opposed to using up six bolts to kill one goblin.

Champion crossbowdwarves fire so quickly anyway, half speed might actually keep them under the speed of light for a change.
