If I'm not mistaken, there are different quality levels of them.  Some are really only good for larger particles such as fine, air-borne sawdust, or pollen.  Large lung-irritants.  Then there are finer ones that allow for passage of air, but not microscopic particles or viruses (which, even though they are sub-microscopic, are much larger than most gas particles in our atmosphere).

I could be mistaking this for a potential application of new technology that hasn't been done yet, though.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Just a question:
Don't those surgical mouth masks people wear, like the Chinese did during the SARS thing, do nothing? I could have sworn they were to keep the germs on the doctor's breath from getting on the patient, not the other way around. They're becoming fashionable where I am.

Some of them are for keeping germs in, some are for keeping germs out. Or something. My mother told me this, and I don't trust my mother.

The virus itself will not exist outside of particles of water vapor that you sneeze or cough out. If the surgical mask can stop those, it will stop the virus from reaching your nose and mouth. But that isn't he only way it'll spread. You touch it, you get sneezed on, anything, then touch your eyes, your lips.

The masks are one level of protection, but you might as well wear a condom with pinholes in it.
