How about adding pipes and dwarven pipeweed?

We've got an alcohol problem already, don't add to it!

Well, it'd spread the problem a bit, I guess. If half the dwarves are hooked on booze and the other on weed, you don't need as much of each, and only half your workforce is gone when you run out of either drug.

In both cases of addiction you'll have dwarves that have only half a brain left, but in one case they'll be your besctesct fffriendsch and in the other case they'll be like, totally mellow, duuuuude...   :p

And in both cases no work would be done.  :)

pipe weed is too cliche  :D

Maybe as an exotic trade good, but i wouldnt like to see every single dwarf in my fortress smoking up at least once a day. Like you said nothing would get done.

Not only that but it would be a second type of miasma!

Well, that's why we would have the "Light Incense" task, using sticks from the Herbalists  :)

And dwarves sitting around on silk cushions, smoking hookahs, playing sitars, and bongo drums, reading beat poetry.

The name generator is perfectly suited for generating that kind of poem.  :)

Sounds more like something those hippy elves would do.

Dwarves seem like the type that chug a beer, sing rowdy bar songs, and prefer their music to be the sound of hammers imbedding themselves in goblin heads.

I'd imagine pipes with some sort of tobacco analogue to be something that dwarves want but don't need. Dwarves will seek to have a pipe on their person, along with a pouch with [insert name of tobacco analogue here]. Whenever they go "on break", they will smoke the pipe and consume one unit of [stuff]. Pipes may be made out of wood or bone at the Craftsdwarf's Shop. [Tobacco substitute] is grown on farms, and must be cured(?) at the Farmer's Workshop.

Perhaps they would also smoke the pipe before drinking and after eating. This would not take any more time and would be done concurrently with the drink/eat action.

I could also see caravans bringing various other smokable things, whether "classic vintages" of our tobacco substitute, or other things altogether.

Dwarves seem to have an inverse tolerance to narcotic substances (at least alcohol). Booze makes them work harder and more efficiently, while normally booze would make someone slower and sloppier. Maybe weed could also have a negative tolerance issue? Maybe making them more active while it would make everyone else passive.

I guess pipe weed would be an aquired taste. Presumably all of you guys like candy, but if i offered you some black licoriche you probably wouldnt eat it.

Pipes could be added to the list of misc craft items.
