How often do you see elves demand that you reduce your treecutting?

I've played many years in many fortresses, and have yet to have the elves mention this to me.  Is supposed to be a rare occurence?

Actually this is a good point, i just finished deforesting 3 tiles worth of heavily forested map area and the Elves wandered happily through the desolate wood-pile dotted wasteland without nary a word. And since i havn't finished my Elf Drowning Chamber yet, they lived too.

I deforest my maps every season out of habit in all of my fortresses, have yet to have the elves complain about it. I have heard you need a live baron for them to send a diplomat though.

I believe they get angry at you based on how much wood you HAVE, not how much you actually cut down. This might explain a few things.

The previous statement seems to be true. The I remember distinctly that the only time elves ever complained was when I had several hundred logs in stockpile, despite the fact that it was the third time I had completely deforested the 6x6 map. The previous occasions had the wood turned into charcoal, barrels, and bins and such.

I believe Elvang is correct in saying that you need a baron (or count or duke). Otherwise the Elves (and humans) don't send diplomats, and the elf diplomat is the one who makes tree-cutting arrangements.

Every fort gets it at some point. Mind, my current one only just got it because I'd moved the major fuel source to magma and DIDN'T have four wood furnaces going non-stop,

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

elves are okay with you cutting the trees, as long as you use every one, and give them the sawdust and ashes to snort.

I had a baron by year 3 on a particular fort but the elven diplomat didn't come by until year 5 or 6.  I don't think I had a huge amount of wood, as all my wood was imported. (I had a few trees on the map, but they were sparse and in a secluded section of the map so I never bothered cutting them.)

By the time they finally did show up my baron was a duke, my population was around 170 and my fortress wealth was somewhere around 3 million due to 2 separate artifact crafts made out of a specific shiny, cyan colored ore.  Perhaps you need a certain population or fortress wealth before they begin to care.
