Currently, when we would like a building made, we select from a list of construction materials.

We see a list such as:
Felsite
Felsite
Slate
Shale
Slate

I propose that rather than listing each instance of an item, we list a summary of quatity of said item.

That is, the list would now show instead:
Felsite (x2)
Slate (x2)
Shale

In fact, the list could be set to be sorted by greatest quantity items first. After all, we probably want to use plentiful construction materials.

This would help to make the interface more streamlined and accessible.
