Friendly Fire (not archery range Q)
« on: April 22, 2009, 04:02:25 am »

Had a dwarven caravan arriving, they got ambushed by gobbos.  Rushed my Xbows to the walls and they opened fire.  Apparently, one of the dworf caravan guards got hit by friendly fire bolt (he briefly showed up as hostile in Unit List).  Easily could have been other FF incidents I missed.  Plus one badly wounded caravan oxen went berserk and I'm guessing got put down by one of my dworfs.

Dwarven caravan (most of it) arrives at trade depot but never gives the "unloading goods" message.  I never even had the option of bringing goods to the depot.  Trade rep goes thru the agreement meetings.  Then the whole caravan just leaves.

--> Will the dwarves be hostile now?  Siege coming?

==========================================

[ As a side note, had a funny/dworfy FF incident.  Child gets kidnapped.  Xbow guard on wall nails the Snatcher and kills the child in bag too! ]

[ Side note 2:  Had 4-5 gobbo thieves in cages.  Noticed a dworf with bucket by cages.  Giving water to gobbos? Baffled.  When i set up cages and let a nerve injured dwarf finish them off for experience, suddenly a child is in the killing room (room was isolated via flood gate).  Guess he was in the bag all that time and was being fed and watered lol! ]

1. Are you sure it was a merchant dwarf who turned hostile? FF does not exist in DF whatsoever, so it could have been an enemy dwarf from the goblin civ.
2. A caravan leaves if it gets attacked. They probably didn't bother re-pathing until they reached the depot. The liaison acts independently of the caravan, which is why the meeting still went through.
3. Your own civilization will never be at war with you, no matter what. They may send a smaller caravan next year, though.

Toady, how much of DF is inspired by Labyrinth? Is Armok actually David Bowie? Because that would simultaneously be disturbing and awesome.

Well, I can't *swear* it was a merchant dwarf.  But, I do know he was wearing lots of steel pieces I was hoping to melt down.  Was watching him closely/greedily and saw other caravan guards completely ignoring him.  Went back to unit list and zoomed him to be double sure.  Hostile dwarf, lots of steel, my buddy!  Then as he approached my walls I checked him again (wondering why he wasn't a pin cushion) and saw he was now a merchant.

And, I had a child in snatchers bag die.  Can't swear he wasn't injured by gobbo snatcher first, but he died very soon after snatcher died from xbow.

I am puzzled.

That's not entirely true. I'm sure a new recruit sparring against an artifact wielding champion would count as friendly fire. Also having your traps be triggered by an unconscious dwarf/pet.

If a lot of the merchant guard's friends were killed it could have pressed him to go insane and go berserk. If he was berserk he would be open season for the marksdwarves in the fort.

It seems that merchants don't care who kills who - if they don't make it out alive, they blame it on you.
