Wall/ground Thickness
« on: April 14, 2009, 11:20:53 pm »

I'm an ongoing newb, so bear with me :D

Does wall/ground thickness affect anything?  Can enemies burrow through/destroy single tiles?  Is there any other reason I should have more than one thickness of ground/wall, other than for aesthetic value or is it okay?  Does wall thickness affect noise buffering?  Thanks!

The amount of tiles does not affect anything to my knowledge, no enemies can burrow or mine yet(I believe it's being discussed), It's all aesthetic value really.

Aannnnd, Walls do not affect noise yet.

Only thing I can think of walls/floor thing being important is cave-ins, since it'll punch through all floors until it hits a solid level or wall.

I always make sure to have at least one layer of more or less solid earth between the surface and anything else in my fort, for the simple reason that caveins make fun fortress defense tools and having a cavein defense crash through ten layers of fort is Bad Things.
Fun, though!

yeah, no effect on anything, except cave ins. and caveins are difficult to cause (although not impossible), because currently the entire world can be supported as long as there's even 1 tile connecting the structure to solid ground.

As far as walls go, some people like to put double walls in certain places (usually bedrooms) so they can engrave both sides of it. Engraving only counts towards room value on the side it was engraved from, so having double walls between rooms lets you maximize the value.

I think that's kind of silly though.

I just give the room an extra row of engraved floors. It's not like a legendary engraver won't produce enough value like that.

I leave two-thick walls in some places of my fortress interior in case I decide I want to carve out a trench or cut out a few nitches for statues or whatever. Makes it a little more flexible if you want to carve down an extra staircase in the hallway or neighboring room or line the hallway with booze or food without having dwarves step on the stockpile.

But thats really more of a asthetic issue as well.
