Social Masters - training method
« on: April 19, 2009, 05:16:20 am »

Hi, this is my first post here. (And my third fortess in-game )

When the first big immigraton wave came in,
I figured out (burned peasant helped me) that having them stand near magma pipe is not good. (luckily another peasan brawled the imp to death very easily, knocking him out on first strike)

So I designated meeting zone 3x3 near fortess entrance.
They all rushed and crowded here.
I'm not so good at management, so there are always (circa) 15-25 dwarves + 4 children.
They talk there and gain all the social skills (Liar, Intimidator, Judge of Intent ..)
One child is so buffed that he is ~Competent in all social skills and unbelievably though and very strong.
I think he is going to be a politician.
After reading the wiki (http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Liar),
I figured out that it is not well known. Is it?

(Sorry for my english)

No, this is a common thing to happen. Children especially will end up with high social skills (that's all they EVER do until they grow up).

They level up grower to if you let them harvest plants.

Welcome, Nic - your english is fine.  (Better than some native speakers!)

Small meeting areas is a great trick, and yes, it's known.  Putting a pump-room next to the main meeting area/dining room/sleeping quarters, and putting all your migrants on "pump" duty is another way to give them fast stats - they are either pumping, or talking, all day long.

One pump can keep 2 dwarfs busy full time, but is not quite enough for 3.

I always feared having so many people in a 3x3 space would cause suffocation...

(This came from an experiance where I had over 40 war dogs and their puppies around an area. Then some of the puppies started to suffocate.

Suffocate? Really? Odd.  My guess is that something got into there, and ripped some puppies throat out before getting annihilated.

Never seen the suffocation thing, but I know about the meeting area thing. Just wait until the first death, that's fun.

AFAIK, the only way to die of suffocation is if the dwarf (or animals) throat has been cut or it was punctured both lungs.

If this all doesn't fix it, your dwarfs are lazy. Apply magma.
"And thereafter, all dwarven children were taught to mind their stools, lest the toilet-fiends snatch their souls from their bottoms"
Try rubbing a cat on it, that seems to help.
