Legendary Mode Questions
« on: April 15, 2009, 05:46:57 pm »

I was browsing through the Legends feature, which was very interesting.  My question is whether the fact that a creature (like a dragon, golem or titan) says "was one of the only ones of their kind" means that it is unlikely I will ever run into one of that kind (obviously not that specific one, if they are dead) in either fortress or adventure mode is it just flavor text?

In any case, I'm awfully interested in locating the old cave of one of the quite prolific (although now deceased) dragons in Adventure mode.  He was AWESOME, did a ton of damage, stole a bunch of things, ate a bunch of pets/people and got a ton of worship.

Also, is there a way to see the history/rulers of the current civs in any mode?  I'm almost sure their is, but I haven't quite figured out yet.  I'd like to see who the dwarven rulers are in my "world."

For the first question, I'm pretty sure it means there is a VERY limited number of them, as I have gotten "Was the only one of its kind".

Yeah, when it says that a creature was one of the only ones of its kind, it is either a megabeast, a semi-megabeast, or a power, and it means that only a few were ever alive, since none of them can breed. In a medium sized world, or a 'Create a new World Now!' one, usually there will be four dragons, four titans, four bronze collossi, and four hydras, in addition to a greater but limited number of minotaurs, giants, ettins, cyclopes. These will be killed by lucky adventurers or lye makers, so they can get pretty rare.

The best way to find that cave is memorize it's name in both the DF languages and in English from Legends mode and then go find one of the towns that the dragon raided and ask them about nearby places. Eventually, they'll tell you about the cave, and then it will be marked on your map.

And when you export a local map image, one of the things that gets created is a list of all the civs, their dieties and their rulers in a text file, and in another text file, the current population of all sites, including caves.

Awesome.  Thanks for the tips!  Exploration is really my favorite thing in RPGs, and the idea to be able to, essentually, go sightseeing is a big draw.

I know you can (In theory) mod a lot in this game...what are the chances of being able to throw functional megabeasts into the world through modding, if someday I decide I am upset by the lack of megabeasts?

My experience with this fabulously in-depth game is awkward and messy at best, but it would seem that is the way of Dwarf Fortress. :D

People usually have a hard time increasing megabeast survival but I heard of some guy removing most of their internal organs so they wouldn't get them stabbed so much and then after world gen putting them back in.
Not sure if it helped.

Also more caves in custom worldgen parameters is supposed to help.

I haven't tried, but I think you could set the megabeasts' SIZE and DAMBLOCK really high during world gen. After you can set it back to normal, and you should have almost all your megabeasts.

Yes - make all megabeasts size 400 and most of them will survive worldgen. You could also give them [CAN_LEARN] which will allow them to gain attribute increases so they get more dangerous over time.
