Are any hits hits on liver always fatal?

In real life, small missing pieces of a liver will regenerate.  I dont know if that's applicable when being hit by sharp things...

I had a rabbit when I was younger.  I made the mistake of holding it once.  Clawed a hole in my guts...  perhaps the game is just being accurate.

But what does the editor say about the metabolic function of the liver?  If slight damage impairs it, then any wound would probably kill you...  I don't have the code here in my office.  Which had a leak in the ceiling while I was away...  which damaged most of my math books...
