i didn't know brooks can freeze
« on: April 06, 2009, 08:38:47 am »

i started on a spot with a brook and it is some type of cold i forgot which
the brook is only thawed out in summer and even then only part of the brook is thawed the northern and southern tips are blocked by ice and the brook goes down 4 z levels with cliffs on both sides of the brook so the water just accumulates since the southern tip of the brook remains frozen the water forms an ice wall the brook on the lower z level and now there is 3 z levels of water just sitting there

is there any way i can harness this power for my own use?
does the way i explained it make any sense to you?

edit:
as soon as i typed this the southern part of the brook thawed and drained the water, muddy brook tops look gross

First time playing in an area with seasonal freezes, eh?

You could route the brook into a moat and try to produce goblin-popsicles once a year.  Diverting water into your fort will prevent it from freezing, and if you have magma, you can dig tunnels under the brook(shouldn't leak, especially if it's frozen) to melt the ice in winter.

Actually, combining the first and third there could make for some good fun.  Multi-use cryo-trap, anyone?

do like I do. make it up as you go, fail horribly, lose dwarves, try again, cavein, lose dwarves, try again, workers are ambushed, trap is activated, malfunctions, goblins kill dwarves ... and then i get it to work so-so which is great. now i just need to forget to use it

Dig a room connected to the brook by a small tunnel, with a floodgate in it.  Next time the water thaws, stick a bunch of gobblins in cages in there, and flood the room.  Last I heard caged creatures don't need to brethe, so once the water freezes you can dig them out and do whatever you want with them :P

On the Wall is a Masterfully engraved carving of Urist McHardcastle and Goblins. Urist McHardcastle is surrounded by the Goblins. The Golbins are stamping on Urist McHardcastle. Urist McHardcaste is laughing at the Goblins. The carving related to the prolonged and bloody death of Urist McHardcastle in the Fall of 1659, the Winter of 1659, and the Spring of 1660. On the engraving is an image of Cheese.

So, are you saying that you get an ice cistern at the base of the waterfall?

Can we get screenshots of this? It sounds cool.

If you had magma, you could make a room under your brook and then connect it to a switch.  Keep it stocked with enough magma to keep your brook from freezing over, but be sure to have a reliable drain(into a chasm, for example).

To trigger the trap, flip the switch, closing a floodgate(BAUXITE MECHANISMS!), draining the room, and allowing the water above the magma room to freeze.

Cue half a dozen "Goblin has been encased in ice" messages.

A nice thing is that unlike encasement in obsidian, you simply pull the lever again to reset the trap.  The magma melts the ice, ready to accept another goblin for a (failed) cryo-freeze experiment.
