[fixed] Crash on Startup
« on: March 31, 2009, 08:30:19 am »

Hi everyone,

I started with Dwarf Fortress last year on my laptop (39d), and I really enjoyed it.
Since my laptop is broken I downloaded the latest released version (40d) on my old desktop.
Its a
Athlon XP 2500 @3.2GiHz
Radeon 9600 XT
1 GiB Ram
Win XP SP3

Everytime I start it is crashing right after the dialog where to chose windowed or full screen.
I also tried 40d11(OpenGL version) there I at least can see the box from DF opening, but then its crashed again.
After the crash windows wants to send an error report to MS.
I did also try the download from the "Dystopian Rhetoric" graphics pack from the wiki which has DF inside (But I dont know its version):  http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Graphics_sets#Dystopian_Rhetoric

Ive seen one or two similar questions in the board but no answers so far.

Im really hoping someone could help me, because I really want to continue playing DF!!!
Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
Sledge Hammer

Could you try deleting your current copy and installing a fresh vanilla copy, without any graphics packs or custom content?  If you installed those improperly, that might be causing the game to crash.

Hi Footkerchief,

thanks for your reply,

I tried a fresh extracted 40d10 zip file, but still get the same error, here the problem signature that windows generates:
Code: [Select]
AppName: dwarfort.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: atioglxx.dll
ModVer: 6.14.10.8494 Offset: 0051140e

For the version 40d11 its exactly the same.

Any other ideas?

PS: My graphic drivers are the latest WHQL drivers from ATI...

Weird.  Do you get the same crash with regular 40d (not 40d#)?

thats curious..
the exe for 40d9 and 40d10 is Dwarf Fortress.exe not dwarfort.exe..
however the exe for 40c and 40d is dwarfort.exe

maybe your missmatching your exes?

Oh wow, good catch.  Sledge Hammer, are you unzipping the fresh downloads on top of the old ones?  If so, don't do that, it will cause all kind of problems.

Im sorry, I've mixed up the numbers.

Ok here it is again:
df_28_181_39e.zip:
Code: [Select]
AppName: dwarfort.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: atioglxx.dll
ModVer: 6.14.10.8494 Offset: 0051140e

df_28_181_40d.zip:
Code: [Select]
AppName: dwarfort.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: atioglxx.dll
ModVer: 6.14.10.8494 Offset: 0051140e

df_28_181_40d11_win.zip
Code: [Select]
AppName: dwarf fortress.exe AppVer: 0.0.0.0 ModName: atioglxx.dll
ModVer: 6.14.10.8494 Offset: 0051140e

So im getting the crash with all these versions freshly extracted from the archives :-/

I always extracted them in a new directory, so no old games were there to overwrite.

Hmm.  Can you run any other games that use OpenGL?

Well some time has passed, but I played UT and UT2k4, Serious Sam (2?), Warcraft 3, SW:KotOR 1/2 and Riddick on this machine.

The WoW trial did also work recently...

Would you mind testing one of them with those specific drivers?  A crash in atioglxx.dll really looks like a driver problem (which doesn't make much sense if you have the correct up-to-date drivers for your card, I know).

wow defaults to direct3d of a sort.
you have to manually change the config file to make it use openGL.

WC3 is the same, and most other games.

give a true openGL game a try.

I just updated my drivers to 9.3 but with no effect.

Now im downloading Scorched 3D, i hope thats a true opengl game ;-)

Update:
I just tried UT which was still present on my system.
I switched to the experimental OpenGL driver in the options, and then I got a "general protection fault"...

Still waiting for Scorched 3d to finish.

Damn, Im getting the same crash with scroched.

So its really a driver issue, strange.
Maybe my graphics card is not very compatible with opengl...

Well thanks for helping me out here!!!

Since I wanted to buy some new PC this month anyway, I just have to wait a little longer.

Just to be on the safe side, does a Radeon 4850 or 4870 work well with DF?

I did a little googling and found out that it seems to be somewhat common to have openGL problems with some ATI Cards and some drivers.

So I looked for some other drivers and I found some modded drivers called DNA.

I installed the DNA ATI XP 8.9, and then DF run!

But its quite slow.
Without sound I only have 20-25FPS in the menu in 40d.

So I tried 40d11, and I have 100 FPS in the menu now, nice!
Now Im curious how the game runs on this machine...

So thanks again for all your help!

welcome! yeah OpenGL can be a bitch.. I like nvidia simply because they support openGL better than any of the others.
