The thing is that implementing more flow types is going to be (if/when done) a real hassle to do.

Right now, flows don't really mix. Magma and water are the only flows, and when they interact they conveniently mutually annihilate and just slap down a new product (obsidian) in its place.

But alcohol can mix with water just fine. So even if you leave it just as those two pure substances, you need to enable some form of mixing. Maybe each depth number out of 7 can be a part of a mixture (such as a 6/7 pool being 2 water and 4 alcohol), but then you have weird issues with how imprecise that would be, and how to deal with things like osmosis/miscibility.

And if it were actual booze, it would get harder. For instance, there are many different kinds of booze, and the game keeps track of where they're made, quality, when they're made, etc. You'd have to somehow incorporate all that as well.

I have no idea how Toady would handle this stuff, if he ever does.

Actually, you miss a very simple solution! 6/7 beer + 1/7 water = 7/7 water for dwarves. If it's been watered down, it's worthless and might as well *be* water! ;)

Mixed liquid names? Punch, slurry, glogg. (Scandinavian, but it sounds ... like drinks mixed) A few specifics for the player to find? Dwarf Fortress: Bartender to Armok?

Oh I love olivine.  I think dark green furniture makes the fortress tasteful.

I want to build a gient keg, with a fortress built around it. It would be so big that breaking it would flood the world.

that is my dream.

But dwarves would constantly siege your fort, and they would bombard you with catapults, in a desperate effort to flood the world...

A thought: it seems odd that dwarves drink entire barrels of booze at a time*. Perhaps kegs could be used as a distribution system: barrels of booze being used as storage for it (or to drink, if necessary), and kegs being semi-buildings set up in a meeting hall or a dining room that can dispense, oh, I don't know, about a mug's worth of the booze at a time. The keg's contents would survive however many drinks worth, and then be refilled with a waiting barrel, if there are any.

As a slight derailment, maybe barrels/kegs could be used to store other fluids that players show an interest in. Like water. Or blood. Or vomit. Or anything that vaguely resembles a liquid.

*: Then again, we're talking about dwarves.

They don't.

A dwarf drinks one unit of booze at a time. A barrel can hold up to... well, I forget how much booze, but I want to say 25, or probably just however much is generated from the still, which could sometimes be much more.

Ah. I suppose that explains the sometimes absurd amounts of excess booze I seem to end up with. :-\
It still seems odd somehow for them to just grab a barrel and start drinking from it though.

It probably took many generations of dwarves to reach the point where they no longer leap into the barrel head first...

Wow, I was just thinking of this, and here I find the thread was brought back recently.

Yes, kegs are very much needed.  Or at least some way to make barrels that will only be used for alcohol.

The problem is this:  Food builds up and lies around your fortress.  Even when you run out of barrels, your farms keep producing food, which builds up and spams jobs saying "HEY, PUT ME IN A BARREL!"  So you end up with several hundred plump helmet roasts demanding to be placed in a barrel.

And, meanwhile, your stills just shut down with a cancellation message...  and when you try to build more barrels to solve the problem, all those piles of hundreds of plump helmet roasts (which have been building up in the meantime) spam far more jobs than your small number of stills.  No matter how many barrels you make, if your farm is producing too much food, you can't keep up -- food is just much better at grabbing barrels than booze is under the current system.

So, long story short, we need a way to make barrels that only our stills can use.  Kegs would be a good way to do this and could solve other problems besides (like the absurd amount of time it takes to drink).

Of course, you can partially solve this by making a big drinks-only stockpile (it will claim barrels, which will then only be used for drinks.)  But anticipating the need for this requires pretty detailed knowledge of how barrels and jobs work on the part of the player, and is a bit counter-intuitive.

I Just set my food stockpiles to not accept barrels *except a small one that only accepts brewable foods next to my stills I like massive piles of food there*

I REALLY like the idea of massive kegs, but the barrel thing does not have to be a problem as the game is currently.

Maybe kegs-as opposed to other barrels-could be made to interact with our stone mugs to create a "drink" reaction? I'd like to be able to actually use all those damn mugs I've got lying around...

Drinking without a proper mug might give an unhappy thought, or just make the dwarf in question messy(ier).
