Some background info: I started playing guitar when school began, (september... something) and it's now april so I've been playing for some ninty something plus days, (not bad at math, I just don't have music everyday). I am left handed and that being, I could not practice at home as left handed guitars are hard to come by, (let alone classical left handed guitars). But luckily I bought this not too long ago, which has been in my possesion for two and a half weeks so far; the string were in bad condition though but no real problem.

Anywaaaay, considering my time I've been practicing this song for about a month and a half? I'm not sure, all I know is that it is very, very difficult as far as most pieces go. Even the experienced guitar players I asked to play this song, (ranging from five to twenty five years of experience) have said that it is very difficult to play: akward fret positions, difficult tempo but non the less a very very beautiful song.

Anyway I maaay be playing this as a solo piece at a concert in May, maaaybe, (I'm not promising anything). If I do not I'll try again next year, there are some things concerning this idea if I atempt to do it though. (But I will PM Toady for that).

I will place a few things in here that can be examined under everyone's opinion.

1. Anyone know how to get a midi or wav or mp3 version of the Dwarf Fortress in game song?
2. What are the chances I will crash and burn, (audiences scare me :'( )
3. How do you think I may do if I try this year
4. My guitar? (It was the best deal I could find)
5. ... think left handers are better at playing the guitar
6. Think I'm going to do it?

The in game song is in .ogg format I do believe, you can play it in a media player if it supports that format, or you can convert it to mp3 (google "ogg to mp3" and you should find lots of options for that).

1.  Answered
2.  Public performance anxiety is hell on guitarists, because they rely on accurate and steady fingers that do what they're supposed to when they're supposed to.  And slipping up tends to make you even more nervous, which makes your hands shake even more, and the spiral just continues downwards in a lovely little fashion.

Playing an instrument and performing onstage are two entirely different things.  If you haven't done many public performances before, I'd have to be honest and say that chances of slipping up on the music are actually kinda high.

But if you make it with the crowd or not depends on how you deal with those mistakes.  If you just try and rush through the thing to get it over with, or if you act ashamed of the faulty parts, things won't go all that well.  However, if you keep a confident bearing (damn hard, I know, but it's still possible even if you're scared shitless) and make the most of your mistakes, you'd be surprised how well that works out.

The audience likes to agree with whoever is on the stage.  If you aren't into the music, neither are they.  If you feel like you're screwing it up, they'll be thinking the same thing.  If you're just chilling out and having fun, they'll follow along.

3.  Honestly?  I think you'd do quite well.  If you've gotten that far on the DF song in such a short time, you've got talent.  You can handle it.  And the only way to get better at a stage performance is to perform on the stage...  Practicing on your instrument won't actually help you that much when you're in the limelight.

4.  Looks fine to me.  I've got no experience with the brand, but it looks like a pretty standard beginner/relaxation guitar (every now and then I like playing a nylon-string just because it's so damned easy).  Unless there's a massive crack in it somewhere, I think you're good.

5.  Debatable.  As with any other lefty-righty thing.   The left hand is supposed to be more closely connected to the right brain hemisphere, which controls creativity.  Your left-handedness could then possibly be linked to a more highly-developed right hemisphere, meaning an increase in creativity.  But that would likely apply itself mostly to coming up with new and interesting tunes rather than learning a tune that already exists.  Right-handed left-brainers might have an easier time locking in the pattern involved in playing a song, as well as understanding the mathematical relations underlying the tones themselves.

If you're thinking about Jimi Hendrix, take a moment to think about how many famous right-handed guitarists you know of.  Now think of how many famous left-handed guitarists you know of.  Just because Hendrix was a god doesn't mean it was due to his left-handedness, as there would most likely be a hell of a lot more famous southpaw guitarists out there if it was.

6.  Damn well hope so.

The forum move killed some of the tabs.  It also looks like it butchered some of the parts you were having trouble with.  The following isn't much more complete, but has a little extra, and the part you hate is probably a lot easier, maybe:

Support? I have support!

Thank you everybody and especially you Toady_One; for the tabs and music which were one of the main reasons for me even considering picking up a guitar. Also to Toady, I plan on being able to perform as much of these as I can.

These new tabs shall keep me busy for the rest of my weekend, I'll just have to fit them somewhere into my crampped schedule. A good thing though as now I have an excuse to go to this after school art place, (they have a printer there) now. If in I do actually go ahead and try to play this piece I'll be sure to try my best to not mess up though but if I do I shall try to go out in Dwarf Fortress style!

But first, there are still plenty of kinks to work out.

"What are the chances I will crash and burn"

I'm gonna tell you something from personal experience.
I play classic guitar (Bach, Villa Lobos, Tarrega etc), all fingerpicking stuff, I don't like picks. I've been playing for like a year and 3 months now with a very good teacher and I practice 2 hours a day on average. The teacher says I'm as advanced as some of his students that started 3 years ago, but I already played the piano so I knew how to read music, this helped a lot.
In the begining (sp?) I was very worried about playing guitar to my friends because they don't like this classical stuff and of course, because I was nervous.
What you gotta do is practice like HELL, I mean like HELL. If you think you're good enough close your eyes and try to play. Play the songs in another keys, try to make it sound perfect with vibratos and all you can do, but put yourself, your feelings in the music. Do this everyday until you are sure that you ARE good, you ARE the one.
Of course I still make errors when I am playing to people, but you shouldn't worry about this and most important, keep going, don't restart the music or it will ruin. Most people won't even notice. Whatever you do, do well and finish it. It's better to have 2 songs that will impress the whole audience than to have 10 songs that will make them sleep.

Today I play in the church every Sunday, have had a guitar presentation with other students and I was invited to play guitar in a piano concert.

And I think it's all the same righties and lefties playing... just practice and you'll get anywhere you want. Your guitar is fine =]

If that right hemisphere stuff is actually relevant at all then you'd think right handers would have more melody (think where their left hand is) and left handers better rhythm. In reality though, don't we just think out what we're going to play and co-ordinate both hands simultaneously to play it?

Also the best guitarist i knew is a left hander and can also play right handed far better than I. Hendrix could play both sides as well. Maybe it's worthwhile playing both ways.

Thanks to Toady for the tab.

I don't know if there's really that much of a connection between hand preference and hemisphere development, I think it's just supposed to be that hand preference would indicate one hemisphere being more developed than the other (thus hinting at greater proficiency in the aspects determined by that side).

And that argument only works if both left-handers and right-handers play a guitar like a right-hander (otherwise, hand positions are swapped).

I once saw a guy playing a right-handed guitar with a left-handed facing.  As in, low E was the string farthest away from his head.  I have no idea what it's like to try and play like that.

Playing a guitar both ways is an excellent exercise for your brain, but I wouldn't recommend it if you actually plan on mastering the instrument.  Each hand develops for a different job, and the longer you use it for that job the better it gets at it.  Switching those jobs around will halt the development (and even cause it to regress, if you go on playing like that for too long) and cause them to work on something new.  Again, great for your head, but it won't help your music.

I sometimes play the guitar in strange ways when I'm bored.  I even tried playing with my toes once (I have unusually dexterous toes...  Not sure which part of the brain that's connected to).  It's fun, but don't expect it to aid your career as a musician all that much.

Ahh that first paragraph explains it. I was thinking something else.

The guy I was talking about actually plays a right handed like that, upside down, and a lot more technical than anyone else I've seen playing normally. He's not the best I've ever seen, but definately the most technical, either side.

It's easy enough to give it a try, just turn it around. I sometimes do as well but it's like starting again.
