Something weird going on with item value and trade
« on: April 05, 2009, 05:27:47 am »

I have noticed that some of the items I have made that are decorated with gems have a fairly high base value, but when they show up on the trade screen, they are worth much less.

For example, I have the following item:

"This is a well-crafted Pig tail tunic. It is made from Pig tail cloth. This object menaces with spikes of masterfully worked Star sapphire by Mosus Stinthastelid and exceptionally worked green glass."

When I examine it, it has a base value of 7380. However, in the trade screen, it only shows up with a value of 82. Could it be that when an item is decorated with multiple materials, only one counts for the trade value?

Huh, curious. Maybe it has something to do with the price changes. Prepared food is exorbitantly expensive for traders yet cheap for your dwarves, so maybe something like that is going on.

Though I doubt it, since trades begin at base value and only go up depending on requests.

Do you have any other similarly decorated items with a discrepancy between their base value and trade value?

Huh. I've noticed some weirdness there myself with decorated cloth goods, but never seen quite such an obvious discrepency. The base value looks correct: decorated (10) with masterful (x12) star sapphire (x60) would put it at 7200, plus the value of the tunic, cloth, and green glass. To get a value of 82 it would have to ignore both the star sapphire and the green glass decorations, but interestingly that seems to include the full value of cloth components (unless the traders were paying a large premium for pig tail tunics?)

I wonder if this is a bug with cloth goods (due to the way that cloth components are handled) or if all decorations are bugged.

I've seen decorated items going for less than their base value.  Everything from totems to, yes, apparently tunics.  However, I'm pretty sure I've seen them priced at less than their undecorated base value, so it isn't just ignoring them.  And it doesn't happen with all the traders.  So either there's a bug with trading, or else traders really, really don't like certain decorations.

Completely ignoring the decorations would give a value of 80☼, not 82☼.  So one of two things is happening with the decorations:
1) They're giving 1☼ per decoration, or
2) They're giving 1☼ * material for the glass, and completely ignoring the star sapphire.

Yeah, I'd bug report it. Upload a save to DFFD as well.

Now that you mention it, the entity raws do include a token for value modifiers of different decoration, with a claim on the wiki that these influence the prices that traders offer for them. Were you trading with elves? Elves have [ITEM_IMPROVEMENT_MODIFIER:SPIKES:0]. Maybe this floors any spike decorations (such as on the tunic in question) to a value of 1?

Beat me to it!  Yeah, this is the reason -- elves really hate menacing spikes, along with pictures of evil stuff.  It's not a bug.

Hmm, interesting, it was the elves I was trading with; I was assuming it would be something like this that I didn't know about, and not a bug.

It's a shame you can't have some control over what decorations are put on items; I noticed that the elves would give more than the basic value for an item with a picture of an elf striking down a human.

Secret sadists, and they don't like menacing spikes.. I KNEW there were reasons to kill them!

Wow, I didn't realize that either, neat. Also, do they really like decorations depicting their race in a good light better? That's awesome.
