Just got a new Pc..
« on: April 02, 2009, 07:03:53 pm »

specs:

3.06 ghz p4, 2.5 gigs of ram, crappy integrated graphics card.

I'm wondering what i could do with this new machine, as i have NO idea what it could be capable of, considering I'm used to playing df on a 6 year old computer, with 256 megs of ram and a 16 mgb graphics card..

Enlighten me!

Hmm, I know there is a wiki page that says what you can expect to do with different comps... let me go find it....

http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/System_requirements

At the bottom of that page.

Looks like you could run a regular sized fortress with all the bonus perks at a quite good rate.

For comparison I have Intel core 2 duo 4400 @ 2.00GHz, and 2.00 GHz 2.00GB of RAM (If that makes sense, I suck at remembering how to find my computer's hardware.)

I can run a fortress with roughly 110 dwarves in a 4x4 area with a brook and bottom to open air magma pipe at about 30-45 FPS depending on how many dwarves are wandering around my exploratory tunnels (All 1 wide and tons of alternate routs, so lots of path blocking and recalculating)

Based on your stats I'd expect you could run about the same at 50-60 or so FPS, which is fairly good I think for that sized fortress.

Of course you could also run a somewhat smaller fortress, or one with fewer features, at the full 100FPS (Or more if you want to change the max FPS)

Edit: should note that I have a massive number of hauling jobs and am clear-cutting the entire area. (Roughly 60ish of my dwarves are on hauling jobs, maybe more)

Karadan a 2ghz core 2 duo is far more than twice as fast as a 4ghz pentium 4.

Well, this is a pretty old system. You should be able to play with older FPS/TPS games or WoW without having any serious FPS problems.
..as for DF. You won't have too much FPS if your fortress gets big [150+ dwarves] & the features are on. Try to play on small embarking areas, and turn off temperature for example.

Is it?  Huh, I seem to have stopped understanding processors.  Although it should be pointed out that DF makes poor use of duel processors, so you could consider my processor speed nearly cut in half for the purpose of running DF (Though of course that means I get to run all my other background stuff on the second processor so nothing interferes with DF)

Dwarf Fortress is rather like Half-Life 2 or Windows Vista.  The initial specs are rather intense, but once you have a computer fast/powerful enough to run it at basic, further improvements won't really net you much of an increase in performance or features.(Half-Life 2 looks just as good on a Radeon 9000, which was obsolete when it was released, as it does on a Radeon x1800, which was released two years later, for example.  Windows Vista chugs along until you get about 1GB RAM and a 1.5Ghz processor, and then it performs downright admirably.)

The most you'd notice, especially with the new graphics tweaks, is that you get more frames when trying to drain the ocean in a fort with several hundred dwarves.

Doesn't work like that either. Multi-core processors are not additive, you don't get half the performance because it only uses one core although using both properly can get you double the performance.

Google image search for "fakefactory" and see if you can say that again with a straight face.

OK, HL2 looks nearly as good on a Radeon 9000 as it does on an x1800.  The x1800 will allow higher framerate and resolution.
