But back on topic, I could see some people appreciating the option to have an ai manage some aspects of forts as they grow larger...

The game will have to perform some basic management at offsite locations anyway to make the Caravan Arc (and lots of other stuff) work properly, so hopefully as a Fortress Mode tool it'll come for free.
