Clear dead units from the units screen
« on: March 30, 2009, 07:58:14 pm »

I propose that deceased units be cleared from the unit screen either at regular intervals (season change?) or via a button the player can press to clear the selected unit.

Just cause the lists get pretty crowded later on. Not a big deal, but a small thing that would be nice to have.

I'm pretty sure this is coming in the next version. We really need it.

Yeah.. LOL I have noticed my units page is getting a little long at somewhat under 250  pages.  Not gonna bother to count them...

I think it would be nice to filter the list rather than remove them permanently. Show/hide dead creatures option.

I second this. Once in awhile you just want to gloat over how many goblins you've killed.
I'd like it if caged creatures could be filtered from the list as well.

Both would be very very nice. I've captured something like 80 goblins for military training once I get my arena-o-death up and running and it always startles me to see "INVADER" on the list under my dwarves.

Its nice to know what mega beasts/ dwarves/ named enemies have died in your fort. Though I couldn't care about all the dead kittens.

Doesn't this just demonstrate we need a list that can sort & search by type?

I have noticed a rather mixed reaction with microcline, but what do people think of olivine?
Oh I love olivine.  I think dark green furniture makes the fortress tasteful.
Wait, what?

I had a similar idea, but was thinking of going one step further: would it be possible to purge the unit list of deceased ones to the effect that the DF removes all affiliations and interactions with them so it's like the units never existed?  I can strip-mine a mountain to the last diggable square and have tens of thousands of rocks sucking up my memory without a problem, but having my hunter so much as think about hunting causes my speed to drop greatly, and methinks it's all that unit data the game has to process and preserve from the critters that get killed/eaten/crafted/engraved/whatnot.

Granted, one thing I could see being a problem is that doing this makes entombment a now-or-never affair or could stop the process half-way through because of an untimely year change, but excluding dwarves from this purge (at least behind the scenes) could fix that - or better yet, make an init option for us uncaring buggers who prefer throwing the bones out with the bathwater, so to say.
