Yeah, [ENVIRONMENT_SPEC:PEAT:VEIN:100] would probably work best.  Although the type of ash used for lye and potash is a specific type of ash made from burning wood.  Depending on the composition of the peat, you might be able to get wood ash (not an expert on this, just making an educated guess), but for lignite, I'm pretty sure there would be no wood ash.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Is there a way to do this so that peat could be useful as a fuel-source, but not be able to melt steel and other metals with high melting points?

I'm really hoping for variable temperature "smelter" type buildings, sometime soon(ish?), so that we can play around with different reactions at different levels of heat.

Magma forges don't mesh with variable temperature for smelting

I don't see why that would be a problem?

If magma forges always stay at a set temperature, and that temperature's too low to do everything, fine, they're still extremely convenient. We can just build other smelters for other tasks.

Not that big of a deal, and makes smelting-and the use of different types of fuel-more interesting.

By the way, peat is traditionally used to heat malting floors in Scotch Whiskey.
That's what gives some whiskeys that smokey, earthy flavour.
I think that's very dwarvish.

I agree. Another excellent suggestion for booze additives.

I did know that peat has been used for heating/cooking fuel for a long time, but I wonder... is it possible to use peat in the real world to fire a smelter, or is the burning point too low?  Would it be an inefficient reaction, so that it takes two "bars" of peat to fire a reaction instead of one bar of charcoal?

Like I said in the first post, it was used that way in the real world.  The Romans used it for that purpose to an extent, say.

Also, trees are technically constructions.  That is why you get a log when a tile holding a tree collapses,

Wait wait wait.. You mean I can auto-chop all my trees by collapsing the soil layer? MUST DO IT

...that's more work than chopping the trees themselves.  And you make it hard to grow more trees in the future.  And it's horribly, unnecessarily dangerous.

In other words, very, very dwarven.
