Dwarf Retrieval

I have this (using MayDayMIX tileset):

How do I retrieve Urist?

The waterfall comes from a river, falls 3 or 4 stories, then flows into a bottomless pit via that long shaft you can see. I'm using the Dwarf Heaven map (http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=32682.0) if it helps. Lemme know if you need more info.

Edit: Never mind; my compy turned off (I kicked the cable x.x) and now I got my miner back at the expense of 3 hours' work. But if it happens again, what should I do?

What's the problem? you want them to get him?
You'll need that water to go low enough for them to wade, or just plug up the water, either way.

You'd need a way to cut off the water flow, either  set up few pumps upstream to slow down or stop the water flow and wait, or shut whatever's in the way of upstream.

You should design your water systems so that you can shut them off.


Like for example:
I started with a cave river
# = Rock
W = Water
S = Water Source
F = Floodgate

Collapsed A Plug Into the River

#########

Built a Floodgate infront of the Rock

    F#WS#
#########
Rigged it up with some mechanisms so I could open it. 
Then I dug out the part of Dirt I collapsed.

When I want water... I have Water.  When I dont want water. The riverbed is dry.
