Well, yes, they do exist, in that I have just demonstrated such. The game just doesn't quite know how to handle them, or something.

If they have different mothers, that could be the reason. The game might use the mother for tracking descendance, and not the father.

So you're saying dwarves are Jewish!

The intruder arose, casting off its black cloak.  "Behold, stunted jesters!  It is I, Scuro!"  A jagged scar marked the goblin's face from eye to chin, his greasy mane gray and wild, and about his neck was the broken silver amulet, strapped together by a leather band.

Yeah, it just has to do with generated migrants.  A mother was never generated for the group, and I haven't checked if non-direct-descendent relationships are tracked through the mother but it could very well be doing that.  It doesn't store relationships that can be easily discovered to save some space.  It'll be Bug 1092.

I think the worst part of the bug wasn't necessarily that their ancestry wasn't tracked, it was that they failed to form any kind of relationship after migrating, at all. No proof to say that this is just a random fluke, but it's notable. Some kind of relationship between them must have existed, which was preventing a new one from forming. The game just couldn't accurately describe it.

If it makes you feel better, I have the exact same bug with one of my metal crafters and his 2 daughters.  He hasn't married since he got here(though I suppose I could arrange for him to do so), so I can't comfirm the rest, but neither daughter recognizes the other's existence.

Only vaguely. Made of the same substance and put to the same use, but a bit like comparing a castle and a doublewide trailer.
