Crash when using modded video drivers
« on: March 25, 2009, 05:28:00 am »

I recently found a good tutorial for DF, and finally decided that this is my game. I'm using an Asus F3KA with mobility modder modded drivers, because there really aren't any official drivers for the Radeon HD2600 on it. The thing is, DF just won't run. It starts briefly, asks whether to play windowed or fullscreen, and no matter which I click, it just throws me back to desktop. Can anyone offer any assistance?

1. Do other graphical games run on your machine?

2. What version do you have?  You might want to try the latest build, 40d11, which handles rendering differently.

Well practically all games run, apart from some older games like Dungeon Keeper 2, everything newer than 2000 runs well. I tried the new version of DF, and it's still the same - the screen switches to a lower resolution for a second, blacks out and then crashes back to desktop with no error message.

In 40d11, you could try messing with the PRINT_MODE and SINGLE_BUFFER options in init.txt.

Nope, that didn't help either... stupid ATI not publishing official drivers for mobility radeons...

try messing around with the video settings. for example, if Fast Write or Write Combining are in the advanced display options, turn them off (and restart). try sliding the hardware acceleration bar to the left one or several ticks.

Ok, problem fixed. I just switched to Omega drivers, and it works now. So everyone having problems with mobility modded drivers, just switch to Omega, they're on the same site. Time to go play some DWARVES!   :D

I feel your pain. Nvidia does exactly the same  :'(
