Unusual dwarven hunting?
« on: March 25, 2009, 06:39:38 pm »

So, due to the cougars on my map, I resorted to unusual hunting methods. The hunters have metal armour, the military sends elite squads on raids to kill camels, and I have just loosed a ballista round on a camel. And HIT it, no less.
The wounds:
Removed both eyes, bruised the left ear, tore the throat out, broke the lower body, the lower spine, and the pancreas, moderately wounded the neck, upper body, and head, and mangled both lungs, the heart, and the guts.

What's your most unusual method of hunting things?

The *large serrated steel disk* strikes the Raven in the head, tearing apart the muscle, shattering the skull, and tearing apart the brain!
A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I usually play on smaller maps for framerate reasons. I'll sometimes build a wall relatively close to the edge of the map, then have crossbow dwarves patrol the top of the wall endlessly.

Peons than gather up all of the corpses and spent ammunition.

i dont usually hunt, i mostly attempt to capture every single animal in the site, and proceed to turn them into roasts and assorted trinkets.

or throw them in with a detained megabeast, sufficed to say, anyne walking along the balcony in that room comes out a little redder than when s/he went in...

I wanted some camel bones for crossbow bolts, so I send my 5-year starting-seven 3-stat legendary woodcutter to go hunting with his axe. He closed in on his humped victim and...
BLAMMO!
The camel walks away unharmed, while my legendary woodcutters head lands 3 freaking tiles away from his corpse.
No other wounds, one round, one attack, one decap.
I was in shock.
what. the. hell.

All dwarves were repurposed to my new hunting tactic(and my revenge).

Urist: Boys! Were going Hunting for camels! our weapon of choice? MAGMA.
Burn you humped demons, burn.

"Yeah. My plan was to drop some kittens into the siege, and have my dwarves freefall into battle, landing on top of the kittens. The plan was kinda dumb though because the kittens were standing on grates, and the goblins killed them with arrows just as I was releasing the freefalling dwarves. So the dwarves weren't able to land on kittens and just fell and died."

i say this often. i am so dissapointed with how megabeasts fare against domestic creatuers. if you put them in with over 50 of nearly anything, they get exhausted, pass out and get clawed to death by kittens. only things i havent tried this with are a dragon, which would likely awesomely incinerate everything, and a bronze colossus, which does not get tired.

dragons allways manage to suicide before they even reach my fort and ive yet to get a bronze colossus surviving world gen.

also, my current map has crossbow hunters regularly cleaning out all the giant cougars, sasquatches and giant eagles. theres three of them survived to legendary after i turned several immigrant waves into hunters, and these three are unbeatable. what helped i think was giving them each a million war dogs. i allways end up with way too many pets.
