I actually grew a good foot long beard at one time. nothin' fancy or anything like that.. but it was like a tarantula, grabbing whatever food might escape my mouth from it's warren on my face. Actually that's a rather disturbing metaphor, so it wasn't like that at all  :(

Maybe closer to a Mind Flayer? eh...

Well this is what it REALLY is

Dwarf Fortress is a world of context rather then definition.

So basically it is more fairytale then Novel.

True, Neonivek, true. But DF does aim to be as much realistic as fantastic. Really, what it needs to become a lot more consistent (I hesitate to use the term "realistic") is twofold; larger farms and multi-tile creatures. Even horses should take up at least 1x2 squares. Well, that and occupancy limits so that you can't have 50 dragons in the same square nine squares.

While lurking, I always thought you lot were silly for making your tiles so tall.

For one, how's a 4-foot dwarf going to properly hew out a 6'6" ceiling?

For another, it just seems silly to use tiles which aren't cubic.

Now, taking the cube root of 40 cubic feet yields a little over 3.4 feet cube.  Not only does this make more sense for a stout, dwarven build, but to me it seems dwarves themselves consider 4' to be "tall," and tend to average more in the 3'-3'6" area, meaning about 3 and a half feet from floor to ceiling is quite sufficient.

If you absolutely must have your tiles be rectangular prisms, then the (unofficial) scaling in 3Dwarf gives tiles that are roughly 2x2x3 units.  Punching this into my calculations gives tiles which are 3 feet by 3 feet by 4.5 feet, which again seems more appropriate for a stout, dwarven build.

I still prefer the 3.4' cube, though.

Also, does anyone else note this thread hadn't been posted in for 10 months?

So the average dwarf is brushing his head against the ceiling at all times? Look, Humans average 5' 10", but most ceilings are at least 7'. Even with bizarre Dwarven psychology, that would at least be uncomfortable for dwarves with thick shoes or hats. Or whom where especially tall. But we know that humans and elves have no problem exploring these places, and that human houses are just as tall as any dwarven room, so it's more likely that Dwarves dig nice tall corridors so that they get more ore.

When I modded in lycanthropes, I thought of this issue.  I concluded that the werewolves measured things differently from dwarves, so what's comfortable to a werewolf is spacious for a dwarf.  What's good for a dwarf is cramped for a werewolf.

I imagine humans and elves are crawling through the Dwarven tunnels.  As for the wagons?  Just a feature of the non-euclidean tile geometry.
