Immigrant selection, skills should be based on export go
« on: April 25, 2008, 09:56:00 pm »

Do you really think Urist McCheesemaker just randomly decides to leave the Mountainhomes without actually considering whether your fort actually produces cheese? The dwarves back home should look at what you've sold to each year's caravan so they can get a good idea as to what your fort produces and whether their skills would be useful there.

Examples: Exporting weapons and armor would get weapon/armorsmiths and furnace operators, clothing would get clothiers and weavers, plants would bring growers and herbalists, and selling cheese would bring the dreaded cheesemakers. Selling goblin clothes/armor would get military dwarves, as they would see there are goblins to fight there. Obviously you would still need to get a few random immigrants each year so as not to lock your fortress into producing only category of good.

But that could also be reversed. If your fortress doesn't produce cheese, then an aspiring immigrant may choose to go since if he/she's the only one making cheese, they'll feel more... special is the term, I believe.

They'll have the monopoly on fine Dwarven Gouda.
