Moving a save to new version?

I am interested in moving one of my save that is on MayDay's 40d up to 40d9 or higher.  I have managed to workout all the init changes needed to make the tile sets work.  I also had a minor issue with CAT_MOUTH not being present.  I got this sorted out.  Finally I just decided to copy the raws from the earlier version to the new version.  Does any one know if this is the proper way of handling things?  Or should I go through and do a comparison on all the files in raw and update where appropriate?

Most of the major changes are hardcoded. You could probably copy the raws and just plop them down into the new version, but do so at your own risk.

Its actually somewhat unusual for a save to be compatible with different versions of the game, so that it works at all is impressive.

If I remember right, there are NO raw changes whatsoever between any of the 40d#'s, so you can go ahead and delete all the raws in the newer version, and replace them with the raws from your older version of DF.

Don't forget, if in your current mod you have renamed or removed a text file, you'll also need to delete everything in the data/objects folder of the DF folder you're moving files to (don't worry about replacing them, the game does this for you).

Not true, it's been possible to move a save from an older version of DF to a newer version since... I think it was the introduction of the z-level. Once in a while, there'll be a minor issue (when Toady implemented refilling magma pipes, volcanoes in transferred saves would overflow and engulf your fort), but nothing that renders the game unplayable.


Keep in mind, there'll be a cutoff point between the various incarnations of 40d and the version Toady's working on now, so your saves will NOT be compatible with the next major release (not counting any future 40d#, of course).

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

DF is rare in that there is so much save compatibility. You can even gen a world with steep cliffs in 39 and import it to a current version and it'll work.

In most games you cannot do that; often times a patch means you need to start the entire game over and may as well just delete your saves.

Well it isn't a major version upgrade.  I just wanted to try and get more performance out of the new builds with the SDL graphics changes.  I had read about people using giant mega project saves on the new builds and I am fairly certain that there is no way they could have created them so quickly after release.  I figured it had to be able to be done.  At least with the vanilla version.  Unfortunately I wasn't able to find anything on the wiki about doing this.  Granted I haven't had a chance to run it much.  So I will post here if there are any issues.

i really wish it was possible to Up-version more easily, backwards compatibility isnt as important though.
it would make many long-term projects Much easier. such as the Fortress design threads.

but im not going to push anything on toady, he will have a LOT of work with the new versions as it is, without having to cater to our every whim.

but yeah, Compatability DOES WORK, just not as easily as some people would hope. its fine as it is for now, i say.

Only copy the save. All 40dX versions are completely compatable, forward and back.

Yeah my problem was that I had genned the world using MayDay's mod.  Apparently there are some raw changes in there.  Something about economic stones and CAT_MOUTH.  I dumped over the raw/objects directory and it worked fine.

Now to work on my first water project.  :)
