If the magam overflows the fortification it will. I'll need a good drainage system.

Fire it over a chasm. Drainage solved. Or if you want it to recycle, build a catcher a few Z-levels down so you can repump it, while still leaving room for the potential overflow to fall into the chasm.

There was a thread about using trees to hold back the magma since ballista arrows can go through trees but magma won't.

Indeed, I am pretty sure that features like this will get implemented later on, because as we all know...Toady cares about every little details thankfully!
