Hey, there, international Microsoft Word users...
« on: March 24, 2009, 05:32:57 am »

Hi, guys.  Sorry I haven't been around for a while (for those of you who remember me), I've been crazy busy working at this boarding school in Switzerland.  I've been teaching a few classes this trimester and now that it's the end I need to write student evaluations.  This is simple enough, except that I need to do them on A5 paper.

I have my Word program set to use A4 as the default paper, so I know that it should be able to give me European paper sizes, but when I got into page setup > paper to change it to A5, it doesn't show up in the list.  It only gives me letter, legal, A4, A3, B4, and B5.  I swear that A5 was there before, but now it's not.  I used to have loads of international sizes in there, where the hell did they go?

I could try to just make a custom sized paper, but my computer is still set to use Imperial measurement, not metric, so I can't set the size in centimeters.

I'm not sure what to do at this point.  I suppose I could try to wrestle with one of the beaten-down old computers provided by the school for long enough to type up these things, but that would really be a last resort for me.

Anyone have any idea what's going on with my Word program or how to fix it?  Thanks guys!

Hmm, my research into the matter seems to be devoid of this question ever being posted. I shall continue, but I'm sure something is out there.

Also, yes I remember you. We were talking about how the girls of this forum have been terribly inactive recently. Good to know you are doing fine.

Finally, it is odd that a program such as Word lacks the ability to use Metric measurements. I don't think there are any programs out now that only use Imperial. I'll look into this was well.

Try this: set the page to horizontal, instead of vertical orientation, then move the slider on the top ruler(the small triangle-like one on the right) to half the total lenght of the page, then write whatever you have to write, and after printing cut off the empty half of your A4. And there you go! A5 is a half of A4, after all.
Or just get the free OpenOffice from the net and enjoy metric system as well as the ability to choose A5 format.

If I try to just set A4 to landscape, it prints on the wrong side of the page (I just get a blank page on the A5 paper), and I just don't have the time to figure out how to fix that.  But I hadn't thought of OpenOffice.  I've never really used it just because I've always had Word (and always been required to use it at work and school), but it seems like a good idea to steer away from the big corporate software a bit.  Word has been giving me a lot of crap lately and I'm not sure I brought my install disc with me from the US, so I'm ready to leave it behind as long as I have another program capable of doing all the same stuff.

Still, if anyone manages to figure out what the problem is, do let me know!  It's always good to have Word there in case I need it for some reason...

Ugh, I wish the end of the trimester didn't have to be the most stressful part!  I only have a few hours left to write these evaluations and get them printed...  I need my vacation!

A word of advice to anyone who might benefit from it: there is something to be said for being able to physically leave work at the end of the day.  Keep this in mind when agreeing to work at a boarding school, where you work for months without a single break.

Wait...  AHA!  I figured it out!  Every time I started up Word it was looking for a printer that wasn't there (a network printer that I'm not connected to right now) even though I wasn't trying to print anything, and then it acted all wonky after that.  It didn't occur to me that this somehow changed my paper size options.  I changed the default printer to the Microsoft XPS Document Writer and now all my options are back.  That was WEIRD.  Why on earth was it doing that?  I think I'll still switch to OpenOffice, I'm tired of this garbage!

Because printers are the bastards of the electronics world.
