I would love the ability to rename regions, civs and their founding teams retroactively. I very rarely see civ names that aren't idiotic, being able to clean up after RNG's failures would probably add a dash of immersion

While we're at it, why can't be set our site's symbol on embark? I got randomly assigned a naked mole dog, not very inspiring. And I only found out 10 years into the fort as my engraver was mucking about so restarting and hoping for a better one wasn't happening

Maybe if the dwarves voted on it?

This might be a good thing to pair with the possibility of not naming your fortress until the first Liason arrives; decide what your symbol is once you've determined your fort's general feel.

Umm there is about 65 indigenous languages in Zambia according to wikipedia, the origin of the name *might* come from one of those, and the sound only have been translated to english... You know, like Wang or Putin.

Nope, it was English. My friend's sister (who's from Zambia but was born to missionary workers so she's "American") was doing medical research there and recorded their names for research purposes. Don't worry, it wasn't a Gardner thing, they weren't lab rats. It was something about nutrition. Anyway, with the 100's of people she recorded, she made a smaller list of "amusing names"

There was Nipples, the girl. A guy who's first name was Tuberculosis, and another kid who's full name was Biomedical Research XXXXXX (where XXXXX is a traditional Zambian last name). The natives had heard these words in English but didn't know what they meant, they just thought the names sounded pretty or exotic or whatever. I don't blame them, it's just one of those curious things that draws a smile on my face :D

That's actually sort of awesome, in a way.

I'm against retroactively naming locations, but it would be nice to get more relevant names than "The Windy Mountains" and stuff like that.

Regions could be named by the locals. E.g The elves would name the part that their beside so you get a name relevant to the elves, like the "Forest of Ancients". Or goblins name their river the "Wash of Blood".

Because getting your ass kicked by a HUGE group of alcohol deprived, mostly insane dwarves can make a goblin bleed ALOT.

Personally, I think the DF naming system is capable of some awesome stuff.

See: The names of deities. Since those names actually follow some basic rules, they tend to be very appropriate AND sometimes very silly. This is good!

I think those kinds of intelligent naming rules, applied to things like regions and creatures, are definitely a good idea in the long run.

Could just let the player roll the naming dice again. Retroactively of course

This would be about the most "player control" I'd like to have for names.
