[NOT A BUG] Water refuses to flow

Working on my first fortress, I tried to accomplish something like this:

  • Water flows from a river into a short channel with fortifications.
  • Water falls seven z-levels, into a longer channel.
  • Water is pumped into a cistern, from where it can be accessed by wells.

What actually happened was this :'(:



1. Water flows in from the river to the right. The water level near the open floodgates fluctuates between 4/7 and 6/7.
2. Water falls down, producing mist as expected. All of these tiles have 7/7 water in them.
3. No water enters the lower channel, except a lone tile with 7/7 water (everthing is three tiles wide). No mist is visible at this z-level.

Did I screw up somewhere, or does the game hate my poor wounded woodworker? :P

*EDIT* Turns out there IS water there, but doesn't show, for the pumps still get water somehow and are filling the cistern as intended (well...not exactly, as much of the water in the cistern doesn't show up either, but it seems to be there). Invisible water?

Hmm.  It might be helpful if you uploaded the map to the Dwarf Fortress Map Archive so that we could see all 3 dimensions.  That's the easiest way for us to check whether you screwed up or not.  Or you could just upload your entire save folder to the Dwarf Fortress File Depot.

The cistern is on levels 9 and 10 - it's pretty large, and not hard to miss.

I believe you may be confused by the fact that stones display at higher priority than water -- a 7/7 tile with a stone in it will show up as a stone.  You may want to hide the stones, using 'd'esignate 'b' 'h'ide.  Then you'll see the water.
