Murals
« on: April 18, 2008, 04:08:00 pm »

Well, I'm pretty sure there isn't a topic on this, but have murals been discussed before? I.e., engravings spanning multiple wall segments, perhaps used to commemorate particularly significant events, either in the fortress or just world history. Opens possibilities for new moods, too; instead of taking over workshops, a section of wall and hallway is used. Maybe nobles could commission specific works, though I'm not sure how that'd work with the current historical events system.

Well we already have engravings on the wall, and I'd like to see nobles designate some themselves.

This is a nobleman's corpse. It is encircled with bands of fine platinum, and encrusted with a big axe.

I like the idea of murals, especially in how they relate to moods. An engraver could, instead of seizing a craftshop, demand a straight stone wall of sufficient length (probably 4-12 squares), or a open stone floor (4x4 square or so) to work on, then carve out his design, using extra stones, metals, gems, kitten leather, etc. to add details and decorations. We'd probably want different decorations than normal artifacts get, though; hanging rings are fine but menacing spikes don't make a whole lot of sense. Maybe embedded stone?

Not if it's in a noble's room.

That'd be a pretty cool idea. Perhaps all engravings could be decorated with things like gems, glass, precious metals, etc...

I've always have wanted this idea to be implemented into the game. We have masterwork engravings so why not legendary?

If I wanted to recreate the world of one of my favorite stories, I should be able to specify that there is a civilization called Groan, ruled by Earls from a castle called Gormanghast.
You won't have trouble supplying the Countess with cats, or producing the annual idols to be offerred to the castle. Every fortress is a pale reflection of Ghormenghast..
