Why is dwarf engineering a combination of incredibly lazy and sloppy minimalism and stupidly over-engineered majesty.

Because that is how the dwarves themselves are, obviously. Why else do they go around encrusted with blood, mud, and vomit while building incredible masterpieces that would buy them a dozen suits of clean clothes and baths for a lifetime?

Am I missing something here? I can't for the life of me figure out why the right gear on Z0 needs to hang in the air; can't it just have a floor under it, thus eliminating the need for the gear on Z-1?
