Miners used to use these to detect dangerous gases such as methane and carbon monoxide

Actually the miners were responsible for the canaries. If the canary died the miner was in a lot of trouble. When they put the canary in the shaft if it collapsed from poor air the miners had to get the canary out too.

I have a caged bird in my game right now, in the zoo.  There aren't any dangerous gasses to look for though, and the cage is too big to keep in inventory.
