Query: Blocking Water Flow

I have a one tile wide/high water flow, and a one tile wide/high passage dug out above it. Is there any way to block the water flow below?

Magma. If no magma, use a screw pump. Pump water from the open tile upstream. This should dry out the water downstream, allowing you to build a floodgate, door, or wall there to block the water entirely.
