Elephants = deadly?
« on: March 01, 2009, 07:30:30 pm »

Hey, kinda new to the game and this is my first fortress in a savage neutral area so I didnt know what to expect. Until a little bit ago it was going smoothly, just some warthogs in the area, but then all of a sudden 3 elephants burst into my fortress through my then unguarded second entrance and kill my farmer, they then leave and hover around until just now all but 1 have left the map. Do I need to be worried about hordes of elephants raiding my fortress?

Hm.  That's odd.  Elephants shouldn't attack like that anymore.  Do you have any hunters?  That could have provoked them.  One tip; hunters=bad.

No, I have no hunters, and the elephants weren't even listed on the unit list until they came and killed my farmer.

Having had a fortress with an economy based on peasants killing elephants with copper swords that only lost a single dwarf to an elephant, I am very tempted to accuse you of lying and challenge you to a duel.

You would accuse me of lying? I accept your challenge! Also, how might I make my one unhappy dwarf happy again.

Let us discuss the conditions of the duel, then.

Make and keep all your dwarves happy by building a legendary dining room, and not giving them their own/making it a meeting hall/building a statue garden inside it. You can then safely slaughter their children, pets, and spouses, and not worry a bit.

Or, magma. Magma solves everything.

Boohoo! I lost all my children, my husband, pets and all my friends!... but... this dining room is... so.. legendary! And, gawsh, this statue! It's beautiful!

What's that you say? 3000 stones need to be hauled right away? I'm on it!

Heh, worked like a charm. Made a big dining room and gave him his own engraved room, now ecstactic. Thanks.

These days elephants are only a worry in an enclosed space where they have a habit of stepping on things.  If they have space they will run away by preferance.  Cage traps on your entrance and doors will keep them out,  a war dog chained up outside will keep them away.

I made the wonderful discovery that if you capture an elephant, the rest of the herd will stand around the cage.  They'll run if there's room, so you can build the cage.  Then they'll stand around the built cage, which is ... suboptimal for sprucing up a room (unless it's a much-loved noble's room).  And if you tame the elephants and let them out, the wild elephant will hang out with its now-tamed herd.

I've had many dwarves grievously wounded by startling an elephant in a staircase.

Might I suggest Doomsday Levers at Dawn?

Correct...hm perhaps the OP is using a mod, or some older DF version?
