Something else that will help if you do go to 3 levels high, build your marksdwarf room close to where you plan on having the enemies discovered. Also make sure to have a second discovery point on the inside as a failsafe for when the first chained animals are dead and not yet replaced. If you position your marksdwarf's room in nice spot, they can shoot at the enemy for a long time, as they come in, go past the room, and then decide to flee. This way your dwarfs have at most 4 oppertunities to shoot things, 1 if they cause the enemy to break before it even gets into the fort.

here's a thought: instead of walls or fortifications, build the maze out of bars/grates. won't stop [BUILDING_DESTROYER]s, and i'm not sure if it'll improve the chance to hit, but worth a try, no?

haha, all interesting ideas, but i've already given up on the fort since i waited.. and waited.. and waited for goblins (never showed up) and my fortress got slaughtered by nobles instead.  that's when i gave up.  ha.

i hate nobles.

Plus 1 internets for having a kitten being struck down in your screen shot.

If you want to have a tower of some sort, the best I find to do is have it directly above your entrance and make it 3 stories. Second story is for archers and 3rd is the barracks. On the first, if you want to get fancy, have flood gates that can release your foot soliders.

Don't worry about killing the kobolds, just scare them off and make sure they don't get anything important.

Maybe I like collecting their large copper knives and vomit/bloood covered clothes ?

The bar of iron I get from their weapon and the negligible value of their clothes and bones is worth the effort of having them swarmed and munched by dogs.

The *large serrated steel disk* strikes the Raven in the head, tearing apart the muscle, shattering the skull, and tearing apart the brain!
A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

the easiest solution is just to turn all the walls into fortifications, that way you don't need to reorganize anything. Animals and chains don't block the path so you can use whatever you want to check for kobalts, especially kittens.
