Placing magma smelters?
« on: February 28, 2009, 04:29:06 am »

Hello, newbie here; only been playing for a short while, but it's already taking all my time.  ;)

First I wanted to say how great this forum is, I've already learned loads just reading through the various topics.

One question that I can't find any help with is about placing magma workshops. I've been digging out simple 3x3 spaces, with the 3 right hand squares channeled out (plenty of magma underneath), and open space beyond the left hand side.

When I try to place the smelter (or any other magma related workshop) it comes up as being blocked, even though shifted just 1 square to the left, and it'll happily settle.

The thing is, I've used this exact 3x3 in a previous game, and the forges worked fine! I am deeply confused.

Also, the magma metalsmith workshop has disappeared from the list of buildable workshops. Now I don't have an anvil yet, so it's largely academic, but I can try to place the ordinary metalsmith workshop despite my anvil deficiency.

Thank you to anyone who can help me with this. Losing is fun, but not getting things to work in the first place is just frustrating.

A magma workshop can be placed over an open space, while a regular workshop must be on all floor tiles. Since you're trying to place a regular metalsmith's forge over an open space, it won't work.

Did you use reveal? The availability of magma workshops is triggered upon discovery of magma map features, and those are disabled when using reveal to reveal the map.

Sorry for the confusion. When I brought up the regular metalsmith's forge, it was only to mention the lack of magma metalsmith forge on the list of available options. It's only magma-related building that I've been trying to place.

Yes. Yes I did. That may well explain some things. Is there any way to fix that?

Supposedly there's some utility that activates that trigger.

Here it is. Personally, I would just save scum to just before you used reveal instead of running a utility every time I start Dwarf Fortress.

I guess I have something to add here:

Notice that when you prepare to place a building how part of the building footprint "X"'s are dimmed out?  Those are the non-walkable parts of the building.

Magma is also non-walkable, obviously.

I always align my magma buildings' non-walkable squares with the open magma squares so that the maximum area possible remains walkable.
