[40a] Pig iron/steelmaking problems
« on: February 18, 2009, 10:24:22 pm »

When I tried to make pig iron, I kept getting error messages: "Urist Smelterurist cancels make pig iron bars: needs silver bars". I looked, and sure enough, under the stone section of the stocks/stats page, silver bars are listed as a required reagent for pig iron and steel. I knew this wasn't right, so I tried to go fix it in the Reaction_Standard file. Of course, nothing was there. The virgin file only had the normal reagents listed, nothing about silver. So now, I'm stuck mining silver until I can find a way around this. The rock file for silver is also unmodified. I have, since creating that world, modified the reaction/stone files slightly, but I have never included anything in the reactions about silver. I don't think modifying the object files after worldgen does anything anyway, and the world in question was created with a brand-new, untouched 40a. I then moved the save to another computer, the one I'm currently using, which has the different object files (which still say nothing about silver), so I worry that the save was corrupted.

Any advice? I can post the save in the worst-case scenario.

Did your modifications to reaction_standard include adding or removing a reaction?

Only adding some reactions (I added in titanium and Mithril to bridge the gap between steel and Adamantine), but just to clarify, I didn't technically change anything; I just brought the save over from one computer, which had an unchanged reactions file, to another, which had the titanium and mithril added in. Either way, I'm not sure where the silver comes in.

Yeah, the extra reactions are almost certainly the cause.  This is probably another case of the "indexing" issue that arises when people add/remove entries without generating a new world.  Basically, the game expects the steel reaction to be reaction number N, when actually it's reaction number N + 2 due to the extra reactions, and the current reaction N is sterling silver or whatever.  Or something like that.  In any case, remove the extra reactions and the problem should go away.

Okay, I see, it's the reaction for making sterling silver or whatever that is in the slot for steel. Thanks. I couldn't find anything on the bug, but if you know about it, Toady must be somewhat aware of it.
