Considering the trouble everyone seems to be having with crazy pressures, all of their reservoirs are filled to the roof.

drowning is actually fairly difficult. you have to have deep water tile with a roof above. otherwise dwarves will tread water until they starve to death, or swim out.
Not true. I've had military dwarves go to a stream to drink (during a booze shortage), see a carp, jump in to fight it, successfully kill the carp, and then drown in the non-roofed stream.

The wiki is notoriously inaccurate on subjects at the cutting edge, frequently reflecting passing memes, folklore, or the word on the street instead of true dwarven science.

something else is going on there, probably related to the carp. i've had multiple dwarves starve to death treading water after falling in to my resevoir.

Don't think so. I've had recruits drown for sparring and falling in.
I think it might be a combination of being stunned/unconscious from the FALL into water leading to the drowning. And perhaps they may tread water in unroofed otherwise. It's time for me to station dwarves in an unroofed room and fill it with river water.

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.
Clearly you've never been drunk.

it could also be version differences twigging peoples memory. most of my drowning experiences are from a long time back, and they mostly come from the first underground lake i found, and the well i stuck in my barracks, both several versions ago. both times dwarves simply could not get out of the water without a ramp or stairs, and sometimes would sit near the access without being stunned or injured, until they drowned or in one case finally get eaten by a giant olm that got tired of chasing dwarves around my undefended fort and decided to go home to its lake.
