Your gold is mine! SHUT UP ABOUT IT!
« on: February 17, 2009, 08:55:27 am »

So, I followed the recommendations I read somewhere and put all the coins I made behind locked doors. Ever since then I've been spammed by dwarves being unable to access it. I even built walls over the doors to see if that would stop them creating the jobs but it didn't help.

How do other people stop the coins being strewn around the fortress and at the same time stop them whinging about not getting to it?

Pretty much I don't think I've minted a coin since the first time I did in the 2d version. Credit cards work so much better (or whatever it is the dwarves use instead).

You'll get an economy working fine without them, and just have the tax collection moaning every so often about needing more coins.

However you could try forbiding the coins now that you have built some, that should stop the spam at least. Unfortunately you can't dump/sell/melt owned items and some of your coins probably are by now so you can't get rid of them easily.

Coins seriously need to be abstracted.

I'd flood the coin vault with magma.

Or build a drawbridge on the level beneath, raise it, then channel out all the floors (let the miners in through an airlock to keep other dwarves out), causing the otherwise-immovable owned coins to fall into your new trash crusher.

I avoid coins made out of copper, silver, or gold. Other metals (and alloys) are fine, though, if you want interesting trade goods. I like minting coins, since they get images on them automatically.

it wouldn't be so bad if Coffers worked better... In tgheory, once you place a coffer in a persons room, ALL coins should just dissapear into it... Though this RARELY happens

I minted steel coins which were immediately claimed as owned. It confused me greatly.

I was hoping to use them as deadly adventurer shurikens.

People who like coins will still take them (or buy them, if not nobility) but they shouldn't be used in the economy.

Yeah, the constant error messages are annoying. Those coins are NOT for you idiot dwarves, they're for the dragon's lair I custom built for him! He likes shiny things, I caught him and dumped him there, and he likes eating goblins! BUT HE WILL DEVELOP A TASTE FOR DWARVES IF I MAKE HIM.

A coin-less economy isn't that bad in Dwarf Fortress. But perhaps it's because you all have hauler-only dwarves rather than spreading out jobs. Haulers make crap money.

The thing that confuses me about dorfs is this. Dorf 1 dies in an avalance or somesuch. Dorf 2 is friends with dorf 3 and dorf 1. Dorf 2 berserks because of his friends death and kills dorf 3. also a friend. W. T. F.
Clearly you've never been drunk.
