Ooh I'll jump into this. I was trying to make giant cave spider silk blocks... (I've got a project...)
I used BLOCKS:NO_SUBTYPE:SILK:CAVE_SPIDER_GIANT
But all I got was boiling silk. Did I mess up defining material type or was it just hubris trying to make a block of silk?

Another question here:
I tried to add a smelter reaction to make turtle shells, to prevent my moody dwarves from going insane. The product line was:
[PRODUCT:100:5:SHELL:NO_SUBTYPE:SHELL:TURTLE]
and I got untyped shells with no value. Still got the artifact, though. Might be the cheapest artifact ever at 30¤, but the dwarf didn't die

[PRODUCT:100:5:SHELL:NO_SUBTYPE:TURTLE:NO_MATGLOSS]

the SHELL uses creature as mat_gloss, it skips item type instead of using item type like STONE,WOOD,METAL.. and so forth it cuts straight to the creature mat_gloss
