One thing I have yet to see mentioned is how the battlefield was set up.

Sending a bunch of melee fighters across open ground to get to bow/xbow users is a good way to end up with a bunch of dead melee fighters.  What you have to do is make sure that the two groups of soldiers are as close as possible to each other before the ranged guys can attack.

Take a look at my current fort.  That sorta-maze of walls outside the main gates means that bowgoblins are practically at point-blank before they can fire on my troops.  No shots fired means no dead dwarves.

Even better than LegacyCWAL's design, you can make something like this:

which will force the goblins into one-on-one melee combat, and in melee combat crossbows go from being death-spewing piercing weapons to rather inferior hammers wielded by untrained goblins.

For the record, you can make the game automatically forbid stuff dropped by dead people. This'll keep your jeweler inside until you decide to mass unforbid the stuff for hauling
