Does anyone know of...
« on: February 17, 2009, 10:29:29 pm »

A free/open source tactical rpg, in the style of Final Fantasy Tactics/Luminous Arc/Disgaea?

Not Battle for Wesnoth, as it doesn't quite have the depth I'm looking for.

The only tactical RPG engine that I know exist is Sim RPG Maker 95. It allows you to create tactical RPGs. May not have the depth you're looking for, but it's there.

The english transaltion is ILLEGAL however. ILLEGAL! Do not break the law! Breaking the law is bad.

I thought only pirating the game along with the translation was illegal.

More likely than not patching the Japanese version is merely breaking the EULA. Not actually illegal as in breaking a law, I presume.

*Precisely* what you're looking for, but not finished yet: GalaxyMage. It's that in every regard- 2D sprites, 3D landscape, strategy RPG. But as I said, far form done. http://code.google.com/p/galaxymageredux/  --  I can't recall but it might be multiplayer too. It's written in Python!

I was going to recommend Jagged Alliance and X-COM, but they're not free / open-source. However, the X-COM remake UFO: Alien Invasion surely is, and it's a lot of fun too. I don't believe it's finished yet, however. It's more playable than GalaxyMage I bet, and it has a very strong team working on it. http://ufoai.sourceforge.net/  --  It also has online multiplayer, which should work very well.

Yeah, I've been following UFO:AI for about a year or so now, and as it stands, the coming version appears to be much more complete (which should be obvious), and I'm holding out for it. But thank you for the response.

Well, first you have to get the version. That you usually do via piracy, which I hate a lot.
