Running DF on a bad video card
« on: February 19, 2009, 04:53:50 pm »

I have this huge beautiful underground fort that needs a ton of stone hauling and other long term chores before it's looking how I want it. On my computer at home everything is fine although the framerate is slow due to being a huge fortress.

I would like to take it to a computer at work to do some of the less exciting chores, but it crashes after about 10 minutes of running. The work computer only has the crappy built-in motherboard video. Is there anyway to just keep DF running on a bad system? The computer itself is pretty good, duel Xeon processors, just no vid card. I'm using DF 40c at home and at work.

DF is not in any way a highly GPU game.
Reduce graphic frame cap to around 24.
You won't really notice any difference increasing it past 24 with a game like DF.
Otherwise, you're SOL, because DF uses less then 32MB of VRAM, and your integrated card is certainly at least that.
The problem almost definitely lies in the processor.
DF can only use one core to begin with, and they're probably not very powerful cores.

Why in the world are you still using 40c?

Yeah I guess I should go to 40d. I don't remember why I never upgraded since I haven't worked on this in a long time. Anyway, if the processor is sorta slow, I should have a slow framerate then right? I wonder why it's crashing. Slow is fine. Crashing is not. I wonder why it's crashing on one machine and not the other.

NM I think I found the problem. The on board vid card has no drivers whatsoever. I'm surprised it works at all.
