[40d] wife labeled as aunt
« on: February 07, 2009, 09:15:42 pm »

Cog and Ustuth just got married.  Cog is Ustuth's aunt (it's a small village).  In Cog's relationship screen, Ustuth is listed as her husband.  Is Ustuth's relationship screen, Cog is listed as his aunt.  Similarly, prior to marrying, Ustuth was Cog's lover, but Cog was Ustuth's aunt.

Is this a live game, or in history?

Live game.  Ustuth is the second generation born in the fortress.

You know, I often wondered if the game had safeguards against this kind of thing.

Siblings don't marry.  But I guess dwarf society defines "kissing cousins" loosely.

They're about the same age, note.  Dwarves don't seem to get to Know other dwarves who are much older -- one of my founders is an unmarried woman, while I have a surplus of young men.

Can you verify through legends whether the she-dwarf in question really is his aunt?  Aunts don't have to be much older than their nephews, especially if dwarves don't suffer from the drop in fertility with age that hinders humans.

Either some kind of bug occurred that's printing the wrong data relation, which is boring.  Or the poor fool really did go and marry his cousin, in which case his children will have webbed feet.  Awesome.

You would have to marry someone a lot closer than your cousin to have kids with webbed feet.

Probably multiple times in the family same tree as well :) Still once Toady gets around to putting in genes and inheritance then I'm sure we can manage it somehow.

That's too much work.  I can verify by checking their parents though.  The options for my younger dwarves are: marry an aunt/uncle, marry a cousin, or marry Tosid.

BTW, I can now confirm the same bug happens with cousins.

I really don't get why people are up in arms about this sort of thing. The notion that you shouldn't marry cousins is fairly new, and Western, so is it really a bug?

Also, we don't even know if the aunt was a blood relation or not.  Although that situation would require remarriage, which I'm not sure the game has yet.

In all fairness, the bug report was for the fact that the relationship name (aunt instead of wife) didn't change based on the marriage, not specifically the inbreeding part.

Yes, I'm in favour of inbred dwarves as far as that idea goes.  The nobles, for example, already behave as though their parents were siblings.

It would give immigrants a new use, besides - giving the fort access to a wider gene pool.

I'm just waiting for dwarves to start marrying themselves. Or lesbian dwarves.
