My dwarfs seem to have gained the ability to skyrocket from no appraisal skill at all to legendary after trading one time with the dwarfen caravan. Maybe other caravans too, but I only noticed it after the dwarfen one. It's happened twice now, once to an ordinary dwarf, then to my Dungeon Master. I can't seem to recall ever seeing the like in previous fortresses, and I'd like ot think I would have noticed something like this before.

Is this at all remotely normal?

Once is a bit fast, but the trader does tend to become legendary rather fast for me too. I think it might depend on the transaction volume or on how happy the other traders left...

I've heard that many small trades boost the level much faster than a large one, so depending on your play/trade style I can see this happening.

It has nothing to do with the trades, I believe, it's only based on being the first person to see the caravan as a trader...

Could be totally off-base.

I think that skill gain is related to the value of items at the depot.
So, if you bring large amounts of your crafts to the depot, your broker is gonna gain a lot more skill.
